About Us
Mandhry Mosque, situated in the heart of Old Town Mombasa, Kenya, is one of the oldest mosques in the region, with a history that dates back to the early 16th century. Located near the coastline, this mosque is a testament to the rich cultural and architectural heritage of Mombasa, reflecting the influence of Swahili, Arabic, and Persian designs.
Mandhry Mosque was established around 1570, during the era when the coastal region was a crucial hub for trade between the East African coast and the Middle East, India, and beyond. The mosque was built by Sheikh Musa bin Mujahid, a prominent figure in Mombasa's history, and has since been a significant religious and cultural landmark.

Things We Are Doing
The mosque has a simple exterior but a very ornate interior with five arched doors and four exquisitely carved windows. There are several inscriptions, seats, and arched windows inside the mosque. The settlers’ religious relics have been well-preserved.
A beautiful illustration of Swahili architecture, which fuses the soothing geometric patterns of African design with the magnificent flourishes of Arabic design. One of only two mosques in the world, Mandhry Mosque, has two mirhabs, pointing toward Mecca, where Muslims face when they pray. The mosque has a simple rectangular form with a rounded minaret.
